Interview with Producer Jordan Yale Levine

Jordan Yale Levine has been hustling to make things happen since his high school days on Long Island. Organizing after-prom events, coordinating logistics with club owners and directing a sales force of 10 was a great outlet for his creativity and naturally high energy level. And the practice he got then seems to be paying off for this 24-year old producer who’s been working in Los Angeles for the past four years and already amassed an impressive number of credits.

Levine’s parents wanted him to become a doctor or lawyer, but after spending a summer with Ted Liebowitz, a family friend who was busy exec producing The Illusionist, Levine shirked college and headed for L.A. to make his own way — sans help from home.

He hit the ground running in L.A. since he knew he couldn’t live off credit cards forever. He networked rapidly, connected with experienced marketer/celeb publicist Franco Sama, and formed Fylmar Productions. In the meantime, Levine put himself on a fast-track to learning everything he could about the industry — absorbing numerous books, attending meetings alongside Sama, checking out the American Film Market.

Soon the young producer was pitching potential private investors for participation in a number of projects. His first theatrically distributed feature, Tooth & Nail, a post-apocalyptic horror tale of survival, was “almost complete” when it came to him, Levine explains. Raising $200,000 for finishing funds, a splashy premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theater and a party at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, which was covered by the major wire services, helped secure distribution.

Levine says his goal is to work with bigger budget projects and become more hands-on. To date, he’s racked up eight feature credits as exec producer, has two films in preproduction (The Cross, Riot), and another, The Land of Astronauts starring David Arquette and Viveca Fox with a $7 million budget, in production. He also finds time to study with a private coach to help further his acting career (2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams).

But the most satisfying moment he’s had in the biz so far was when his parents came to the Tooth & Nail premiere and told him, “Maybe you did make the right decision.”
